Simona Halep became the highest profile casualty at Roland Garros as the third seed slumped to a 7-5 6-1 defeat to Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.
Halep, runner-up last year, disintegrated after losing a tight opening set – allowing the world number 70 to dictate play on Suzanne Lenglen.
It was the Romanian’s second Grand Slam defeat to Lucic-Baroni after also losing to her at the US Open in 2014.
Lucic-Baroni’s reward for eliminating Halep is a third round meeting with French 29th seed Alize Cornet.
