The Spanish Football Association has announced that it was to suspend all domestic competitions from May 16 due to a dispute with the government concerning a new law on how funds generated from television deals are distributed.
According to AFE president Luis Rubiales, the proposed changes do not offer players adequate benefits.
The status quo heavily favours Real Madrid and Barcelona. Poorer teams have for years called for rights to be pooled to help them make ends meet.
The suspension comes as Barca lead Los Meregues by two points, with only three games remaining. The Copa del Rey final on May 30 between the Catalans and Athletic Bilbao could also be disrupted.
